Argus: ARCHITECTURE FOR SALE: THIRD UPDATE

Readers who care about fine architecture will be pleased to know that the sale of St Alban's Armadale (see "Architecture for Sale", Argus, 30 October 2012 and subsequent updates) will not after all lead to any kind of destructive redevelopment. I understand the Coptic Orthodox Church has bought St Alban's. This is excellent news. The new owners will maintain and respect the structure, especially the noble interior, and continue to use the church for the purpose for which it was built.

ABOUT ARGUS

To the very limited extent that this blog has a theme it might be described as things I notice around me and give myself the indulgence of commenting on. Beyond that I would hope it to be unclassifiable, rather like an old-fashioned commonplace book. It is not intended to be political, philosophical, artistic or religious in character although there will be posts that fit those categories. There will also be elements of a fantasy world, and a few friends and contributors having their say, some of whom may be said to have only a subjective existence. Words will take precedence over pictures but I'll try to modify that in due course.

The name Argus was that of a venerable Melbourne newspaper, taken over and first dumbed then closed down by the London Mirror group in the 1950s, but in this instance is inherited from a column I wrote in the magazine Quadrant for several years; it seemed a good name for a collection of general observations but was and is perhaps not entirely appropriate in that it implies an omnispective capacity to which I do not pretend.

A NOTE TO THE READER

One writes to be read and I hope someone may find a moment's diversion in what I write. But at the end of the day the blog is just my opinions which, if found uncongenial, can easily be dismissed as of no account. That said, if you don't like the first piece you read scroll down to the earlier ones. There is considerable variety, not every post is serious or meant to be funny, and you might find something you'll enjoy. Most posts are not strictly topical and ought not to have dated too much.

ABOUT ME

I am a journalist. I have worked in the newsrooms of the Melbourne Herald, the television station Channel Seven in the same city, and BBC Television in London. I lived in Italy for ten years and was a senior lexicographer-translator on the Dizionario Italiano-Inglese commissioned by the Italian educational publishing house Paravia. In 1999 I started the Australian travel magazine Coast & Country and edited it until 2011. I am a periodic contributor to The Spectator Australia and Quadrant.
